The Goethe-Institut New York and the American Association of Teachers of German bestow the Certificate of Merit for outstanding achievements in furthering the teaching of German at all levels in the United States of America. At the MFLA 2001, Mike Ross gave a great presentation on the tremendously successful job he's doing at Jackson High School. His talk dealt with "How to Build Your Foreign Language Program", A step-by-step method to increase the enrollment in your foreign language program.
Please pass this info on to your colleagues and encourage as many people as possible to come to the MFLA. Since there are not so many occasions where we can all meet, it is so important to come and network. Look at the MFLA program and the differents sessions/workshops that will be offered.
*The 2004 Goethe Netzwerk Spring Workshop took place March 12-13 in the Potawatomi Inn, in Southern Michigan.

Vielleicht eine praktische/hilfreiche Idee: Jede H.S. und jede Universität sollte auf der Homepage die dort unterrichtenden Deutschlehrer abbilden, damit alle LehrerInnen sich besser kennen lernen, weil viele sich ja nur ein oder zweimal pro Jahr sehen. So verbessern wir unser Networking und unsere Zusammenarbeit.

Besucht die Homepage der AATG und informiert euch über die vielen Materialien, die über die Jahre hinweg gesammelt worden sind. Schickt eure kompletten Daten an die AATG-Michigan, so dass die Organisation effektiver arbeiten kann.... - die richtige Email-Adresse, die richtige Anschrift, die richtige Telefonnummer.
In dieser Zeit ist es enorm wichtig, dass wir uns alle unterstützen, wenn es um das Thema geht, ob Programme gekürzt oder ausgebaut werden. Ausserdem ist es wichtig, dass wir wissen, wo die Ressource-Personen sitzen, die uns bei bestimmten Themen helfen könnten. In einigen Regionen leben nicht viele Deutsche oder es gibt vielleicht weniger Möglichkeiten, die Sprache zu benutzen, da ist es sehr hilfreich, Leute aufzulisten, die als Experten oder als Kontaktpersonen in Kursen, in German Clubs usw. vorbeikommen könnten und vor allem, die Zeit und Interesse daran hätten. Schickt mir Ideen, die ihr habt oder Informationen über Stammtische! Oft suchen Leute, die neu in irgendeine Ecke Michigans kommen, Gruppen, denen sie sich anschliessen können.

- A few weeks ago, the Netzwerktrainer von Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana participated in a Workshop organized by Uwe Rieken, from the Goethe Institute Chicago. On Friday afternoon, the group visited the Mennohof. Dinner was served in a hotel owned by the Mennonites and run by the Amish. In the evening, after dinner, there was a very interesting presentation by Thomas J. Meyers, Ph.D. on his extensive reasearch on the Amish. When writing his dissertation, he also worked in an Amish school which allowed him to better understand the ways of the Amish.
On Saturday, the workshop continued with German teachers creating outlines for classroom units on this fascinating topic. For Lunch, the group went out to an Amish farm where an Amish family allowed us some more insight into their life. Times are changing, some traditions remain the same, but the many challenges necessitate some adapting to the different way of life around them. Different groups change different aspects, e.g. farming getting tougher to live off, more men go to work in factories. ..... - We got a glimpse of a different way of life. The AATG-Mi might organize a follow-up workshop with the Amish in Michigan. Please take a look at some of the websites that provide some information on this topic. The best library, aside from one in Ontario, on the History and Life of this group that came over in part from German speaking parts of Switzerland and that still speaks the language, is located at Goshen College, in Northern Indiana, in a small, but pleasant college town. Anybody who is interested in finding out more or in researching this topic should take a weekend or a few days in exploring a way of life that might make us reflect a little bit on our own way of life.

Hamburg (dpa) - Fußball bleibt trotz der Fülle von TV- Übertragungen die Fernsehsportart Nummer eins unter Jugendlichen. 54 Prozent aller 12- 19-Jährigen sehen im TV am liebsten Fußball, für Motorsport interessieren sich 43 Prozent, für Basketball 29 Prozent, für Boxen 28
Prozent und für Tennis 26 Prozent. Dies ergab eine am Mittwoch veröffentlichte Umfrage unter 1000 Jugendlichen der Sport+Markt AG im Auftrag des Deutschen Sportfernsehens (DSF).
Mehrfachnennungen waren möglich. Nach den DSF-Angaben vom Mittwoch sind Trend- und Modesportarten im Kommen. American Football wird von 18 Prozent der Befragten im Fernsehen erwünscht, Beachvolleyball von 17 Prozent, asiatische Kampfsportarten von 16 Prozent, Snowboarding möchten 15 Prozent der Jugendlichen sehen, zwölf Prozent nannten noch Skateboarding. dpa
